Jules Tavernier and the Elem Pomo

Come join us on Saturday, April 2, for a bus trip to the de Young Museum in San Francisco. There, we will see the stunning and important exhibition, "Jules Tavernier and the Elem Pomo," organized by the de Young and New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. The show includes 15 items from the Grace Hudson Museum's collections of Pomo basketry and material culture. Ticket price includes: 1) round-trip bus transportation, departing from and returning to Civic Center in Ukiah; 2) admission to the de Young Museum; 3) a complimentary copy of the exhibition book. Guests are responsible for their own meals: bring a sack lunch and snacks, dine at the museum's cafe, or you can find outdoor food vendors within a short walk of the de Young. Proof of vaccination and mask will be required before boarding the bus in Ukiah!

Jules Tavernier (1844-1899) was a French-born painter who traveled through the American West and became well known for his images of American Indians, many of which were made in California's North Coast. The centerpiece of this exhibition is the 4 x 6 feet painting, "Dance in a Subterranean Roundhouse at Clear Lake, California," depicting an Elem Pomo dance of renewal. The exhibition is just as much about Pomo culture as it is about Tavernier and his paintings.
